L.A. cops to get video cameras

Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday the city will buy more than 7,000 police body cameras, enough to equip every officer on patrol.

“I want to make sure LAPD is on the cutting edge when it comes to crime suppression and constitutional policing,” Garcetti said in announcing the moves.

While calls for video cameras on police officers have grown in light of events in Ferguson, Mo., and nationwide protest demonstrations about police tactics, Garcetti said Los Angeles police have been testing use of body cameras for months, and that he was pleased with the results.

The mayor said more than $1.5 million in donations and grants have been raised by the city’s Police Commission toward the project. The city will make an initial purchase of about 800 Axon cameras, and he will provide funding in his fiscal 2015-2016 city budget for amounts needed to acquire the remainder of approximately 7,000 cameras,he said.

Los Angeles has almost 10,000 police officers on the city force.

The initial cameras will go to patrol and special detail officers in specific areas of the city, including South Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and areas near downtown, Garcetti said.

“These cameras will help law enforcement and the public alike find the truth — and truth is essential to the trust between the LAPD and the community, which has been a key factor in lowering crime to record lows,” Garcetti said

City council member Mitchell Englander said Los Angeles will be “the first major city to have a camera on every police officer.”

City council member Curren Price, who represents South Los Angeles, said, “Our community, and in particular communities of color, have asked for transparency” in policing. “This city-wide body camera program will help us answer that call, increasing public trust in our police department in our communities that need it most.”

Nationally, one in six police officers are equipped with the cameras, Associated Press reported.

Los Angeles police commission President Steve Soboroff said he estimated the cameras would cost roughly $10 million for the first two to three years.

Pope Francis – the first Latin American pontiff – also criticised “those who look obsessively at their own image”.

He has demanded reform of the Curia.

There was silence at the end of the Pope’s speech.

Addressing the Curia on Monday, Pope Francis said some power-hungry clerics were guilty of “cold-bloodedly killing the reputation of their own colleagues and brothers”.

A man accused of knocking another man unconscious inside a North Beach food market was charged with second-degree murder after the victim, who had been in a coma since the attack, died over the weekend, police said.

Roger Todd Perry, 53, was initially arrested and charged with one count of felony battery, but police upgraded those charges Monday after the victim, 58-year-old Mohammad Hussein, died at the hospital on Saturday. The cause of death was complications of blunt head injury, according to the medical examiner’s office.

On Dec. 1, Perry fled the M&L Food Market, 7446 Collins Ave., after he backhanded Mohammed A. Hussain following an argument while standing in line at the store.

Video taken of a checkout line shows the two men first standing beside each other simply talking, before the discussion escalates, with Perry making a sharp pivot and backhanding Hussain across the face.

Hussain can be seen falling backwards to the floor unconscious. He was rushed to the trauma center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where the father of two remained in a coma with severe brain bleeding until his death Saturday.

Perry was found in Palm Beach County on Dec. 11, taken into custody and brought back to Miami Beach, where witnesses picked him out of a lineup.

Miami Beach police said Perry waived his rights to an attorney and “admitted his involvement.”

Perry remains in custody at Turner Guilford Knight jail in West Miami-Dade.

Miami Herald staff writer Charles Rabin contributed to this report.

Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant could have shared breakfast every day.

The breakfast Rondo and Bryant enjoyed together Thursday in Boston had been planned for weeks, sources told ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne. However, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers did have a brief discussion about a Rondo trade a few months ago, according to Shelburne.

Boston’s willingness to engage in trade talks involving Rondo reportedly is informational at this point.

The C’s likely would ask for at least one first-round pick in exchange for Rondo, sources told Shelburne.

Nevertheless, Rondo’s long-term future remains a mystery. The Celtics could lock up the talented point guard and look to build around him. It’s also possible he…
