Today’s sign that we’re all getting old: Kobe Bryant’s newest Los Angeles Lakers teammate — Kentucky freshman Julius Randle  — was one years old when Kobe was drafted in 1996.

And like any future basketball player born in 1994, Randle, who was taken with the No. 7 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, grew up a fan of the then-young Lakers superstar. He even has a #throwbackthursday picture of himself wearing a Kobe jersey (back before the Black Mamba switched to No. 24). Randle posted the picture after he learned he’d be taking his talents to Hollywood.

Oh y'all didn't know I grew up a LAKER fan?

Somewhere in the world there’s a toddler currently taking his first, tentative steps. Though it’s hard to wrap your head around the concept, that baby could one day be playing on the same professional basketball team as…

Boston has launched a full-court press for Kevin Love.

The self-proclaimed “City of Champions” continued their weekend courtship of the Minnesota Timberwolves forward, a courship which saw Love visit Fenway Park, get lunch at the Cask ‘n Flagon, and meet up with Rajon Rondo.

For the finale, Boston brought in the best they’ve got: Big Papi.

Yes, former Minnesota Twins DH and all-around Beantown hero David Ortiz offering Love advice on leaving Minnesota for Boston. Diabolical.

Love has one year remaining on his contract with the Timberwolves, and the team has said it would be open to at least listen to offers to move him.

Former NBA referee, Tim Donaghy, joined Thru the Wire Sports Talk Radio to discuss his betting picks website, www.RefPicks.com, which correctly picks NBA games at an estimate rate higher than 70%….The funny thing about the interview is Mr. Donaghy picks the Thunder to win the Championship and of course they have been sent fishing by the Spurs. (We will add in that if Obaka had played it would have been a different series!)

Tim also discussed the current state of the NBA, and a few other things including Marijuana use in the Association.

Legendary Chicago baseball broadcaster Harry Caray was known to appreciate a cold Budweiser now and then. But a new Chicago Sun-Times report reveals that for tax-deduction purposes, Caray actually maintained diaries that included details of where he caroused, and with whom. The Sun-Times looked through Caray’s 1972 edition:

Saturday, Jan. 1, lists four bars: the Back Room, still on Rush Street, plus three long-ago joints: 20 E. Delaware, Sully’s and Peppy’s, with expenses for each $10.30, $9.97, $10, and $8.95. This in a year when a six-pack of Old Style set you back $1.29.

You needed to cite who you entertained to get the write-off, so on New Year’s Day he lists Dave Condon, the Tribune sports columnist; Billy Sullivan, who owned Sully’s; and Joe Pepitone, the former Yankees first baseman who had been traded to the Cubs….

“These guys did nothing but go out…

English boxer Carl Froch retained his WBA and IBF super middleweight titles Saturday night at Wembley Stadium by knocking out George Groves in the 8th round. Froch beat Groves last year by TKO, but controversy surrounded the fight as many believed that the referee ended the fight too early. There was nothing controversial about Froch’s devastating right cross that electrified Wembley.

After the fight, Froch dropped to one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, model Rachael Cordingley. Froch said after the fight that the proposal was “unofficial,” because he couldn’t get a ring in time.

Via the Daily Mail:

“I did ask Rachael a sneaky question after the fight but it’s not official. She said, ‘Yes.’ I told her how much I love her…. I couldn’t sort a ring out.”
